Reflections: Ministry and Counsel offers:

In the last several decades, environmentalists, writers of various sorts and composers have given much attention to the spirituality of place—the canyon lands of Utah, the Arctic, Tinker Creek in Virginia, and more. However, knowing the life of the spirit through place is hardly a modern awareness. The Fourth Century Desert Fathers and Mothers also knew the relationship between place and one’s spiritual life. One said, If anyone “settles in a certain place and does not bring forth the fruit of that place, the place itself casts [that person] out, as one who has not borne fruit” (from Thomas Merton, The Wisdom of the Desert). We live in the Ohio River Valley. What is the spiritual fruit of this place that we must bring forth? How does your presence here bear spiritual fruit for you?

Reflections: Ministry and Counsel offers:

A Poem by Thomas McGrath

How could I have come for far?
(And always on such dark trails?)
I must have travelled by the light
Shining from the faces of all those I have loved.

The poet sees that he has travelled not by the light from the faces of those who love him but by the light from the faces of those he has loved. One hopes that these faces are one and the same. However, in an interesting turn of phrasing, the poet suggests that his love has stimulated the light in others’ faces. There is an unintentional reciprocity in our love.

We are accustomed to crediting the guidance from the love light that others give us. McGrath reminds us that the love we give contributes to that light.

Reflect on the light that your love has stimulated in others.

If you would like, pack a lunch to eat at the farm after we finish. You are invited to take a walk to the pond or around the fields or check out the interesting things in the house and barn.”

Reflections: Ministry and Counsel offers:

“Sometimes we hear Quakers or attenders say that Meeting for Worship on First Day is a welcome respite from the week’s demands and urgencies. They relish being able to sit quietly during that time. If First Day is the only day that we allow ourselves to sit quietly and open to the silence, we are cheating ourselves. At least once every day this month, stop. Sit. Quietly. Do nothing except to open yourself to God’s presence. For at least five minutes. Quiet body. Quiet mind, Quiet heart. Don’t say that you don’t have time. You have all the time there is.”

Reflections: Ministry and Counsel Offers:

“What do you revere?

Frederic and Mary Ann Brussat, editors of Spiritual Literacy, suggest the following practice:
(Breathing in) I stand in awe . . .

(Breathing out) of all Creation.
But you can focus this breath meditation any way you want. You might substitute for ‘Creation’ God, Divine Love, the Light, Jesus, etc.

Once each day for the next month, practice this breath meditation (with your variation) as you look out a window on your garden, as you engage in walking meditation, or whatever other time and place you have chosen.”
